The government has released new rules regarding the use of sheep and goats in films. Snorri Þórisson, managing director of production company Pegasus, criticises the new regulations and brands them as nonsense.

The new regulations were announced in November of last year and are to ensure that animals on set are treated humanely. The rules dictate that the animals only be trained using positive reinforcement by a specialized handler, and that the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, MAST, be made known about the shoot ten days in advance.

In an interview with RÚV, Snorri points out that there are no specialized sheep trainers in Iceland and it can often be difficult for producers to determine the day of shooting ten days ahead, seeing as weather and circumstances can quickly change.
“It’s ridiculous that one has to apply for a licence to be able drive a flock of sheep once through a frame. This over-supervising has become ludicrous.”
