Holtavörðuheiði road is open to traffic again. The road was closed yesterday due to severe weather, forcing around 200 motorists and travellers to spend the night in Reykjaskóli school in Hrútafjörður and the community centre in Laugarbakki.

The road across Brattabrekka in West Iceland is currently impassable but crews are currently out clearing the road of snow.

The weather forecast for today, Monday, is quite good. However, the Icelandic Met Office warns of a strong gale in all parts of the country tomorrow, Tuesday.

South-easterly winds will pick up tomorrow afternoon and are expected to reach a speed of more than 25 metres per second (90 km/hour, 56 mph). Travel conditions on mountain roads will deteriorate quickly tomorrow afternoon and many roads are expected to become impassable (Hellisheiði road linking the capital area and the South coast, is likely to be closed between 2pm and 7pm), so please plan your travels accordingly.

Considerable precipitation will follow increasing winds in the south tomorrow and temperatures will become warmer.
