Medieval Days, a festival celebrating the Middle Ages and the trading post in Iceland, will be held at Gásir from the 17th-19th of July this summer. There are various events going on over the course of the weekend, all in the spirit of the Middle Ages and a real effort is made to keep everything as authentic as possible.
This includes, but is not limited to, sailing on a boat built from a detailed drawing from ancient scriptures; historic stone throws; lessons in archery; demonstrations on how sulfur was used to create gunpowder; and food from the Middle Ages will be for sale. (Not to worry, it’s only based off of recipes from the Middle Ages, it’s not many centuries old!).
Gásir area is located in Eyjafjörður fjord, North Iceland, approximately 11km (6.8miles) north of Akureyri tpwn, Gásir Gásir was the main trading post in North Iceland during the middle ages and is mentioned multiple times in the Icelandic Sagas. Archaeological digging in the area suggests that Gásir was a trading post up to the 16th century, and but whole area is now protected by law in order to preserve this national monument.
This year marks the 12th year, ‘Medieval Days’ are celebrated at Gásir.
Since 2003, the Middle Ages have been recreated for a weekend, in Eyjafjörður fjord in Northern Iceland.
