Travellers who were driving on the Ring Road east of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon on Sunday morning were faced with a rather unusual obstacle on the road: A massive boulder had fallen from the mountains, rolling down the mountain side to land smack middle in the road.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority cleared the boulder off the road before it had caused any accidents.

Þorleifur Olsen, who's an employee of the IRCA in S.E. Iceland, discovered the boulder sitting in the middle of the road and immediately took steps to ensure the safety of travellers and to have the boulder removed. He shared photos of the scene on Facebook.
The boulder fell from the cliffs above the farm Hali in Suðursveit district, east of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. The boulder stopped in the middle of the Ring Road, where it created a dangerous obstacle to traffic. Þorleifur told told the local news site Vísir that rock fall like this is relatively common on the Ring Road east of Höfn, but less common in the area where the boulder fell on Sunday.
