Geysir hot spring erupted on Saturday, reports Vísir. The famous hot spring, located in South Iceland, erupts very infrequently, last erupting in 2009.

Halldóra Eldon, an employee at Hótel Geysir in Haukadalur, witnessed the eruption. “I’ve worked here for two years and never seen Geysir erupt during that time,” she said.

The sudden eruption happened around 3 pm on Saturday. The popular tourist destination was teeming with visitors who were lucky enough to be on the scene when the old geyser hurled massive amounts of boiling water into the air.

Geysir was the first geyser known to modern Europeans. The English word geyser, derives from the Great Geysir. The Icelandic meaning of the word is “to gush” or “to spurt”. In the past, Geysir’s activity has been greatly affected by frequent earthquakes and eruptions are extremely rare.

Strokkur, another large geyser in the area, is one of Iceland’s most active geysers, erupting about every 10 minutes.
