Four young German travellers narrowly escaped and their luggage was saved yesterday when a superjeep they were travelling on caught fire. The incidence took place shortly after three yesterday afternoon at a parking spot near Gígjökull glacier, one of the outlet glaciers of Eyjafjallajökull glacier in South Iceland.

The travellers and their guide were standing near the car when they noticed the car had caught fire. The guide managed to pull all their luggage out of the car, including their passports, before the car was consumed by the blaze. Police in South Iceland was immediately notified, but when the fire department arrived at the scene the car was a smoldering wreck but the remaining flames were put out.

According to the local news site Vísir the cause of the fire is unknown. The owner of the company which rented the car, Super Jeep Excursions told Vísir that the company was insured against accidents of this type, and that he was just glad nobody was injured in the accident.

The company sent a second superjeep to pick up the German travellers and their guide and take them to their next destination.
