The German Airline Lufthansa has announced it will be increasing its offering of flights to Iceland dramatically. A total of 137 new departures to Keflavík will be added from May until October of this year, more than doubling the number of flights to Iceland offered by Germany's largest airline. Germans are among the largest group of foreign visitors in Iceland.
Lufthansa is not only the largest airline in Germany, but the largest airline in Europe: Lufthansa Group has over 600 aircraft, making it one of the largest airlines in the world. The airline has been flying between Munich and Keflavík for several years during the summer months, but began offering a year-round service between Keflavík and Frankfurt last year.

The airline recently announced that it was adding 137 departures from Frankfurt and Munich this summer, an expansion of 62%. The local news site Túristi notes that the addition of flights by Lufthansa goes a long way to make up for the reduction in flights between Iceland and Germany due to the bankruptcy of Airberlin earlier this winter, and the announcement by Eurowings earlier this month that it would reduce its number of flights to Iceland. Eurowings is a subsidiary of Lufthansa.
