Today sulfur dioxide gas pollution from the Holuhraun eruption is expected southwest of the volcano. According to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) the area area between Skeiðarárjökull glacier in the east and Selfoss town in the southwest can expect some levels of pollution. Tonight the pollution might travel further towards west and could reach the capital area and Reykjanes peninsula.

IMO reports that tonight, wind will decrease in Iceland, and tomorrow (Tuesday) calm winds are expected and cold weather. Under such circumstances, there is increased likelihood of high concentration of pollution. In the afternoon, light southerly and southwesterly breeze is forecast, and the areas north and east of the eruption will primarily be affected by pollution, although volcanic haze will probably be seen widely in Iceland on Tuesday.

This interactive map by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) shows how the gases from the eruption in the centrel highlands will travel over Iceland in the next 36 hours.

Air Quality Index (AQI)
