Gas emissions from Holuhraun eruption create a beautiful sunrise in the capital 1742

10. okt 2014 16:25

In the last few days the sulfur dioxide emissions from the Holuhraun eruption have drifted towards the capital area. The blue haze, combined with unusually mild weather and clear skies, created a beautiful sunrise this morning.

Today and tomorrow gas emissions are expected to drift southwest of the eruption in the central highlands. Daily predictions on gas pollution are issued by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO).

IMO's weather forecast is excellent and with winds expected to remain northeasterly, bringing Holuhraun emissions to the capital area, we should be able to witness a stunning sunset tonight and, again, a beautiful sunrise tomorrow and during the weekend.

Below is IMO's gas predictions for tomorrow at noon. Yellow indicates moderate amount of pollution unlikely to effect people's health.

Air quality has remained good in the capital despite the Holuhraun haze. You can view live air pollution measurements from Reykjavík's monitoring sites here and here for monitoring sites around the country.
