Mýrarbolti, or Swamp Soccer, is a popular sporting event that takes place in Ísafjörður, Westfjords, during the first weekend in August each year. According to bb.is, the future of Mýrarbolti is currently unclear as Ísafjörður town council has decided to allow the construction of a beach volleyball court in Tungudalur valley, where the Swamp Soccer championship has usually taken place.
Jón Páll Hreinsson, one of Mýrarbolti’s organisers, does not oppose the construction of the volleyball court, although it might put the future of Swamp Soccer in jeopardy. “We’ve only ever worked according to a one-year-plan. This year is no different,” he said.
Swamp Soccer is a 6-a-side football match played in bogs or mud. Teams are generally made up of groups of friends, many of whom who have put serious effort into creating team uniforms to show up in. In addition to the football there are numerous concerts and live music acts during the weekend.
