Friday's heavy rain and mudslides cause road closures and significant damage in Siglufjörður 3417

Heavy downpours in North Iceland on Friday and Saturday caused severe surface flooding and mudslides in Siglufjörður, reports the National Broadcasting Service. Crews are currently working to clear Siglufjörður road of mud and debris after Friday’s mudslides. The road will remain closed until cleared, which could take a few days.

According to the IMO around 100 mm of rain fell in 48 hours in Siglufjörður – the average for a whole month – causing localised flooding and significant damage to homes and roads in the town.

“I’ve lived in Siglufjörður for sixty years and I’ve never experienced a downpour like this,” Guðni Þór Sveinsson, a resident, told the National Broadcasting Service.

 

Forecasts predict dry weather in the north until Thursday with temperatures ranging between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius (46-50 Fahrenheit).
