The election chief for Framsóknarflokkurinn, the Progressive Party in Reykjavík, has accused Fréttablaðið newspaper of publishing a hateful picture of Sveinbjörg Birna Sveinbjörnsdóttir, the first candidate for the Progressive Party in Reykjavík.

Svanur Guðmundsson, the party‘s election chief, released a written statement where he insists Ólafur Stephenssen, Fréttablaðið‘s editor, issue a public apology to Sveinbjörg Birna because of a cartoon by cartoonist Gunnar Karlsson published in Fréttablaðið on Saturday. The cartoon depicts party leaders in Reykjavík, but shows Sveinbjörg dressed in attire reminiscent of Ku Klux Klan members.

The reason Sveinbjörg is shown this way is thought to be because before the elections she explained that should she be elected she would consider revoking a building permit recently allotted to the Muslim Society in Iceland.

In his statement, Svanur writes that the cartoon is not only rude but also a form of bullying and insists Ólafur, Fréttablaðið’s editor in chief, issue an apology to Sveinbjörg.

In an interview with the National Broadcasting Service, Rúv, Ólafur explains that the newspaper has never censored its cartoonists and will not apologise for the cartoon.
