Free the nipple: second wave of free nipples will hit Reykjavík June 13th 2630

The Icelandic #Free the Nipple movement has announced an event on Saturday June 13 when supporters of the cause will gather at Austurvöllur square in front of Iceland’s parliament on downtown Reykjavík.

Some intend to sunbathe topless at the square or challenge in other ways the double standards regarding the censorship of female breasts and society’s tendency to sexualise the female body.

The #Free the Nipple campaign suddenly went viral in Iceland last March after Adda Þóreyjardóttir Smáradóttir, a 17 year old student at the Commercial College of Iceland, tweeted a picture of her nipples as a response to her male friend who had posted a photo of himself bare-chested after she had tweeted news about the upcoming “Free the Nipple” day at her school.

When a young man mocked Adda a wave of Icelandic women launched an emotional and powerful response on Twitter posting photos of their nipples in support of her.

Numerous student bodies and feminist associations declared March 26th as ‘Free the Nipple’ day and urged female students to join the campaign by going braless.

The support was overwhelming. A group of female students from Kvennaskólinn grammar school in Reykjavík took to the streets marching proudly bare-breasted along Bankastræti street in downtown Reykjavík and to Iceland’s parliament building in Austurvöllur, and a member of parliament for the Bright Future Party published a photo of her breast under the caption: “This is for feeding babies. Shove that up your patriarchy.”

According to the organisers of the June 13th event, Stefanía Pálsdóttir and Guðbjörg Ríkey Thoroddsen Hauksdóttiur, more than 1.100 people have already confirmed their attendance.
