Freak weather conditions in East Iceland Thursday night: Temperatures top 20°C, 68°F 5489

Parts of the Eastfjords experienced an unusual summer heat wave yesterday evening, as temperatures topped 20°C (68°F). The automated weather station at Dalatangi, between Seyðjsfjörður fjord to the north, and Mjóifjörður fjord to the south, recorded 20,1°C late last nigh at eleven last. Temperatures in Eskifjörður village further to the south reached 18,6°C (65.5°F).

However, travellers hoping to capture the balmy summer weather in east are out of luck. Temperatures in East Iceland are expected to drop rapidly in the next few days, while the wind is expected to pick up. Temperatures will be at freezing point by afternoon today, and are expected to be below freezing by tomorrow. Wind speeds in the Eastfjords are expected to reach gale strengths 18-25 m/s (40-56 mph) Saturday morning, but will slow down by afternoon.
