Four times more fatal car accidents in 2015 than in 2014, many caused by visiting travellers 43

The number of fatal car accidents spiked in 20156, with 16 fatal accidents so far this year, compared to only 4 fatal accidents in 2014.

Ágúst Mogensen, at the Transportation Accident Investigation Board, tells the local newspaper Morgunblaðið, that increasing numbers of foreign travellers are one key explanation. “This year six foreign drivers have caused fatal accidents, including five travellers, but none last year. In addition we have had reports of serious traffic accidents where foreign travellers are involved.”

The latest fatal accident took place on the second day of Christmas, December 26, when two cars crashed into one another at a single-lane bridge in South Iceland, killing the driver of one of the cars. Two other serious traffic accidents took place over the holidays, both in Fáskrúðsfjörður fjord in East Iceland, where two cars slipped off the road due to icy conditions, falling down the steep mountain hill. One of these accidents involved foreign travellers.
