Four hikers rescued from Kjölur plateau in the central highlands 2469

A search and rescue unit from Blönduós village, North Iceland, has found tourists that sent out a distress call earlier this morning. The team of four hikers had got exhausted at Kjölur plateau in the central highlands.

Their plan was to hike over the plateau starting at power station Búrfellsvirkjun to the south. They began their trip yesterday but had only managed to walk a short part of the route when they gave up and called to be rescued.

Kjölur is roughly defined as the area between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers and lies at an altitude of about 600 to 700 metres (1.968-.2298 ft.).
