Unusually high concentrations of sulphur dioxide were detected in Austria yesterday, especially in the eastern and southern regions of the country, reports the Austrian Met Office. The gases can be traced to the ongoing Holuhraun eruption in central Iceland.
Strong prevailing eastern winds carried the foul-smelling gases from Iceland to central Europe. Sulphur dioxide has also been detected as far away as northern Finland.
Pollution from the eruption is expected north of the eruption today (Wednesday). The Icelandic Civil Defence has advised those in the area with respiratory problems and children to stay inside with the windows shut.
