According to the Swedish newspaper Aftenbladet, a foul-smelling fog blanketed Västerbotten province, North Sweden, yesterday. Geologists suspect the smog and the smell can be traced to the ongoing Holuhraun eruption in central Iceland.
To some accounts the rancid smell reminds one of rotting meat, while others think it more resembles that of manure.
“The smell comes from the combination of water, sulphur and carbon dioxide. When these chemicals mix they produce a rotten egg-like odour,” geologist Rune Larsen said in an interview with Adressavisen in Sweden today.
