Former Reykjavík mayor gets a Texas tribute inked to his right arm 2698

Comedian and former mayor of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr has gotten himself a new tattoo in honour of Texas.

Jón moved to the United States with his family at the beginning of the year and is currently living in Houston, Texas, serving as the first Rice University’s Centre for Energy and Environmental Research in the Human Sciences (CENHS) writer-in-residence.

The comedian has several other tattoos. On his right forearm he has the logo of English punk band Crass, on the left forearm he has the sign of Reykjavík city and on his right shoulder a pirate flag.

Jón uploaded a photo to his Facebook page showing of his brand-new tattoo. It depicts the outline of Texas, the largest state of the States, with a star that represents the largest city in the state, Houston, Jón’s hometown at the time being.

The reason for the tribute is simple. Texas gave me my name, explains Jón on his Facebook page but he had fought a long battle in Iceland for legally carry the name Gnarr.

Iceland has strict naming laws which state that names established by tradition solely as men’s or women’s forenames may not be used as family names.

Jón’s chosen last name, Gnarr, is actually a mispronunciation of the forename Gunnar – which is Jón’s middle name. According to the comedian his mother would call him in for dinner by shouting “Jón Gnarr!” and the name stuck.
