Parliamentarian and former Minister of the Interior, Ögmundur Jónasson, wants an injunction on charging visitors for access to a volcano crater Kerið in south Iceland. Ögmundur has been leading the line against landowners charging a fee for access to Geysir geothermal area. Yesterday a district court deemed the fee illegal.

Landowners of Kerið crater started charging visitors last summer ISK 350 (EUR 2, USD 3). The situation differs from the Geysir area where the land is owned partly by the Icelandic State. The land where Kerið is located is in full private ownership.

However Ögmundur, and many others, believe travelers have constitutional rights to visit Iceland's natural wonders and therefore the charging is illegal.
