Foreign visitor spending in Iceland has increased by 30.7 percent between years, according to newsagent Vísir.

Non-cash expenditures (payment transaction by debit and credit cards) by foreign tourists, was 22.2 billion ISK in August alone. 3.6 billion was spent in Icelandic stores, a 22 percent increase compared to 2014.  

Jakob Frímann Magnússon, managing director of Miðborgin okkar, says foreign visitors have not only had a positive impact the local economy, they also bring more life to the capital.

“The city centre was pretty vacant before the increase in tourism, especially during the autumn and winter,” he said.
