Search and rescue teams rescued a foreign hiker who had stepped into a geothermal vent in Reykjadalur valley, north of the town of Hveragerði, east of Reykjavík. Reykjadalur and the area north of Hveragerði is rich in geothermal activity, with countless small vents, some of which can be difficult to spot. The geothermal activity makes the valley popular among hikers.
According to an announcement from Landsbjörg, the Federation of Search and rescue teams, the search and rescue teams were dispatched to where the man had stepped in one of the many vents, burning his leg. The teams dressed the man’s wounds before carrying him two kilometres to where the hiking trail begins and the road ends. An ambulance took the man to the hospital.
Travellers hiking in areas where there is geothermal activity should never leave the trail, both to avoid damaging delicate natural formations and to avoid stepping into vents, injuring themselves.
