Foreign traveller dies in white river rafting accident on Hvítá river 6827

A foreign traveller, a man in his seventies, died during a whit river rafting expedition in Hvítá river in South Iceland. The accident took place near Brúarhlöð canyon, a popular spot for white river rafting in one of Iceland's most powerful glacial rivers. Gullfoss waterfall is located upriver from the site of the accident.

Fell from the boat
According to the police in South Iceland the accident took place early afternoon on Saturday. The man had joined a river rafting tour in Hvítá with other travellers. The man fell out of the boat, but was his travel companions managed to pull him back onboard. By the time the man had been rescued from the river he was unconscious. Attempts to resuscitate the man at the scene failed.

The police was immediately notified of the accident and a Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched form Reykjavík at 13;00 to airlift the man to hospital. The man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík.

The police in South Iceland has not revealed the identity or nationality of the victim. The accident is under investigation.

Second fatal accident in Hvítá this summer
This is the second fatal accident in Hvítá river this summer. On July 19 a man fell into the river by Gullfoss waterfall. Despite a massive search and rescue operation the man has not been found and is presumed to have drowned. He was a 22 year old Georgian refugee.
