A foreign traveller died after a head on collision on a bridge in Öræfasveit region in South Iceland. Two cars crashed into one another on a one-lane bridge on the ring-road over the river Hólá by the foothills of Vatnajökull glacier. The accident took place at three in the afternoon on December 26. The ring road was closed temporarily due to the accident.
Six passengers were in the two cars, but while all the other passengers were injured in the crash, none suffered serious injuries, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports. All passengers were airlifted by the Coast Guard to the emergency reception at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík.
The deceased was the driver of one of the cars. According to the Police the travellers were from Japan and China. The deceased man was born in 1969 in Japan. He was travelling with his wife and two children, while the travellers in the other car were Chinese, a man and a woman.
Police has not released information on the cause of the accident, but we at Iceland Insider would like to use this opportunity to stress that travellers stay safe and drive carefully. Many bridges in Iceland, even along the ring road, are only single lane. When approaching a single lane bridge you must slow down, while the car which comes first to the bridge has the right of way. Always buckle up, and please drive safe.
