Search and Rescue teams from the town of Ísafjörður rescued a foreign traveller from the cliffs above the town on Friday afternoon. The traveller, a woman whose age and nationality have not been released, had been climbing in the steep hillside above the town when she found herself at an impasse in the cliffs. When the woman realized she could not continue in any direction she called ICE-SAR for help.

Five members of ICE-SAR in Akureyri walked up the hill to where the woman was stuck in the cliffs. The search and rescue team reached the woman and assisted her down the hill to safety. A spokesman for ICE-SAR in the Westfjords told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that the whole operation went well and took less than an hour.

This is not the first time ICE-SAR is called to rescue hikers from steep mountainsides or cliffs in the Westfjords. ICE-SAR has in recent years had to rescue several hikers from the mountain side above Ísafjörður. Earlier this month a hiker was rescued from steep cliffs near Látrabjarg cliffs in the Southern Westfjords. The steep hillsides with their cliffs and loose screes can make these mountainsides very challenging for inexperienced hikers. Many of these cliffs are only suitable for very experienced climbers.
