A family travelling in Iceland were injured in a serious car accident in South Iceland yesterday. According to the Police in South Iceland the accident took place 20:00 yesterday evening as the family of three was driving on the ring road east of the village of Vík í Mýrdal, near the region Álftaver. The police is still investigating the cause of the accident, but the travellers lost control of the car, which rolled over and was thrown off the road.

As the car rolled over the woman was ejected from the car, suffering serious injuries which required her to be airlifted to Reykjavík. The husband and son suffered only minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Reykjavík. According to the police the woman was not wearing a seatbelt, while her husband and son were wearing seatbelts.
The cause of the accident remains unclear as the police is still investigating. However, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority have issued a warning that roads in South Iceland can be slippery due to ice.
