A foreign traveller was airlifted to hospital in Reykjavík early yesterday evening after a serious car accident on Sprengisandur trail in the Central Highlands. ICE-SAR Highland Rapdi Response units and a Coast Guard helicopter responded to the accident.
The accident took place near Highland center Hrauneyjar, on the Sprengisandur trail, one of the most popular of the Central Highland mountain roads. Four people, all foreign travellers, were travelling in the SUV when the driver lost control of the car, with the result that it rolled over.
Three of the people suffered relatively minor injuries,and were taken by ambulance to hospital, but the fourth traveller, a woman, was injured more seriously, was airlifted to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík. The Police in South Iceland has not released the nationality of the travellers or the condition of the woman.
