Shortly after eight this morning ICE-SAR volunteers headed yet again to Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail to assist travelers in distress. The people, a couple, had requested assistance due to exhaustion. The people told ICE-SAR the weather was deteriorating, it had snowed overnight and they were unable to continue their trek.

Pro tip: Check the weather before going on a hike
This turn of events should not have come as a surprise, as both the Icelandi Meteorological Office and ICE-SAR had issued weather and travel warnings for the area, advising people not to go hiking in the Central Highlands.

According to the National Broadcasting Service the people were located near the southern end of Fimmvörðuháls trail. Members of the ICE-SAR company of Hvolsvöllur village reached the people before ten, escorting them to safety.
