The Icelandic Coast Guard and members of ICE-SAR battalions in Öræfi district were put on high alert shortly after one in the afternoon after a foreign traveler fell into Svínafellsjökull glacier lagoon. The man was able to get out of the water on his own and climb onto an iceberg in the lagoon before rescuers arrived, according to a statement from the Police in South Iceland.

Sveinn Kristján Rúnarsson, the Chief Superintendent of the Police in South Iceland told the National Broadcasting Service that the man was cold and wet, but had not suffered any injuries. It is not clear why the man fell into the lagoon, but he was able to swim to one of the icebergs floating in the lagoon, climbing onto one of the icebergs where he was stuck until ICE-SAR members from Öræfi arrived.
