A foreign traveler suffered first and second degree burns on his leg after stepping into a geothermal vent. The accident took place shortly after ten yesterday evening in Hveradalir geothermal area, east of Reykjavík. The traveler was on a Northern Lights tour when the accident took place.
The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that the group of travelers had arrived with a tour bus to view the Aurora. Hveradalir is an old ski lodge located in the slopes of Mt. Hengill, and Hellisheiði heath. The Ring Road from Reykjavík to South Iceland crosses Hellisheiði heath: If you are driving east from Reykjavík, the Hveradalir lodge and geothermal area are on your left-hand side just after you drive past Hellisheiði power plant.
The people had exited the bus and were walking along a marked path through the geothermal area when the accident took place. The traveler who was injured had stepped off the path and accidentally stepped into the vent.
According to Morgunblaðið the injuries extend from the sole of the foot all the way up to the thigh.
The traveler was taken by ambulance to the Landspítalinn National University Hospital in Reykjavík.
