The Police in Suðurnes District recently stopped a foreign traveler on Reykjanesbraut highway for criminal, and frankly dangerously insane, speeding. According to the Police the driver was barreling down the road at a speed of at leas 159 km/h (99 mph). The speed limit on Reykjanesbraut is 90 km/h (55 mph).
Speeding is a persistent problem on Reykjanesbraut, the highway connecting Keflavík Airport and Reykjavík. The Police in Suðurnes District has stopped 15 drivers for speeding in the area the past few days.
The traveler who was stopped going 159 km/h was fined 230,000 ISK (2,100 USD/1,800 EUR) for his criminal driving, according to the Police Diary. The diary does not say why the traveler was speeding, but we at Iceland Insider suspect he might have been late for a flight. We would therefore like to urge people to slow down! Going 159 km/h might get you to the airport a few minutes earlier, but it might also end up getting you, and potentially other motorists, killed – or it can slow you down even further and cause you to end your vacation in Iceland with a huge speeding ticket.
