A fatal accident took place in Þórsmörk nature reserve in South Iceland earlier today. The accident took place shortly after two in the afternoon in Steinholtsá river, one of the unbridged rivers which have to be crossed to get to Þórsmörk. The river has swollen significantly due to heavy rains in recent days.

According to the Police in South Iceland two foreign travelers, a husband and wife, were attempting to cross the unbridged river when they lost control of the car which drifted downstream with the river. The people exited the car and attempted to make it to the shore. The man managed to get to the riverbank, but the woman drifted unconscious to shallows. When rescuers arrived at the scene the man was both cold and wet. According to the National Broadcasting Service a specialized mountain truck was needed to reach the woman in the river.
The woman was airlifted to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík, where she was pronounced dead.
The nationality of the travelers or further information about the accident has not bee made public.
Crossing unbridged rivers is both dangerous and difficult and should only be attempted in vehicles equipped with a four wheel drive.
