Three people were injured in a severe head-on collision on the highway between Reykjavík and Keflavík airport early Sunday morning. One of the three people was pronounced dead upon arrival at the emergency room. The deceased was a foreign national, a male. He had been a passenger in the vehicle which had entered the wrong side of the road. His age or nationality have not been made public.

The accident took place at 5:44 am in the morning on Sunday on Reykjanesbraut highway which connects Reykjavík and Keflavík airport. Two vehicles, a small SUV and compact car, coming from opposite directions crashed into one another. The accident took place opposite a Bónus supermarket south of the highway.
According to the police the accident was very severe. Both vehicles were totally destroyed in the accident. The highway was closed until eight in the morning while police and first responders cleared the scene.
Three people were in the vehicles, the drivers and the passenger. According to information from the Metropolitan Police the injuries of the drivers are less serious.
Speeding is a persistent problem on Reykjanesbraut. The accident took place on a part of the road which is still only two lanes, one from each direction. The lanes are not separated by a median or a fence.
