The temperature topped 20°C (68°F) in North Iceland yesterday, with the highest temperatures recorded in the town of Húsavík and the Ásbyrgi canyon, a popular tourist destination east of North East of Mývatn lake. The temperature in Húsavík was 22.7°C (72.9°F) and 22.8°C (73°F) at Ásbyrgi.

Stores ran out of hot-dogs, burgers and steaks
Typically temperatures in excess of 20°C are usually only seen during summer. Yesterday's heat wave was therefore welcomed by locals in North Iceland who took the opportunity to enjoy the early peek of summer. A boom in backyard barbecuing caused stores to run out of hot-dogs, hamburgers, steaks and other grill-meat.

The IMO forecasts sudden summer weather will continue today, with a calm southerly wind, 3-10 m/s (7-22 mph), clear skies in most parts and temperatures ranging from 12 to 20°C (54-68°F). The highest temperatures will be recorded inland in North- and East-Iceland. Fogbanks and cooler at the south coast and also chance of fog at the west coast in the evening.

The temperature in Reykjavík is expected to reach 15°C (59°F) by afternoon.
