An image of the Icelandic National Football team is being used by a nationalist Danish political party to gain votes. The Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) regrets the use of the photograph by Danskernes Parti and states that racism and exclusion does not belong in football.
According to the National Broadcasting Service, the Danish political party Danskernes Parti (The Party of the Danes) compared a photograph of the Iceland team to one of the national football team of France, urging people to share the photo if they “believe France should partake” in the Africa Cup of Nations rather than the European Championship.
In a statement from KSÍ, the organisation says it has wholeheartedly partaken in FIFA’s fight against discrimination in football over the past years and will continue to do so. The organisation also states that during the Euro 2016 the Iceland team and its supporters had become known for being friendly and inclusive and regrets being affiliated to hateful propaganda such as this.
