The Ísafjarðarbær Town Council has suggested that low flying planes be banned in order to maintain the serenity of the Strandir area, at the Northeast part of the Westfjords. Ásbjörn Björgvinsson, chairman of Iceland Tourism Board, states that tourism businesses across Iceland need to better coordinate their activities to align with the interests of the tourists.
In areas where bird watching and scenic hikes are the lifeblood of the tourist industry, a low flying plane or helicopter can detract from the experience.
