Residents of Flateyri village in the Westfjords woke up on Friday to discover the first snow of the winter had fallen in the mountains above the village overnight. To some locals the thin white cover which had fallen in the top of Eyrarfjall mountain by the village was a fitting end to a unusually short and cold summer.

According to the local news site Bæjarins bezta it is not unusual that the first snows of winter fall this early in the mountains in this region. On several occasions in the past few years the first winter snow has fallen in the mountains in mid-August, or even late July.
