Even in downtown Reykjavík you can run into these furrly four legged Reykjavíkians: The cat Baktus (a big fat black and white male) can be found hanging out in the Icewear store in Austurstræti street, and the ginger and white Púki can be spotted napping in store windows around the bar Lebowskis on Laugavegur street.

Baktus even has his own Instagram account: You can also check out the hashtag #baktusthecat on Facebook for more of Baktus' downtown adventures. (See below).

Now two friends, Gígja Sara Björnsson and Ragnheiður Birgisdóttir, have teamed up with a local shelter to open a café on Bergstaðastræti in downtown. In an interview with the local news site Vísir Gígja and Ragnheiður say the café will be small and cozy, just a few steps off Laugavegur street. The café will serve as a home to adult cats in search of a home, where guests will be able to make new feline friends before adopting them:

People are always searching for cute little fluffy kittens, but there are so many other cats in search of a home. The idea is therefore to allow people and the cat to get to know one another, and people can then adopt the cat they hit it off with.
