The first puffins to arrive in Heimaey island, on the south coast of Iceland, were spotted on Thurdsay, the first day of summer. Puffins spend the autumn and winter out at sea but return to land to breed in late spring.

Iceland is the home to more than half of the wold’s puffin population. This small, sturdy bird with the colourful beak goes under the name „Lundi“ in Icelandic and has i.e. become an emblem for the Westman Islands archipelago. According to the local news website, Eyjarfréttir, the puffins were seen near Klifið and Heimaklettur cliff. Local experts maintain that the birds have never arrived this late before.
