Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir became the first Icelandic woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, early Sunday. She received congratulations from Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, the president of Iceland, who said Vilborg Arna's determination and drive were an inspiration to others.
It's amazing. It's crazy being here! said Vilborg Arna when she reached the summit after an eleven hour final climb to the top, according to local news site Vísir. She became the seventh Icelander to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
First two tries ended in tragedy
This was Vilborg Arna's third try to reach the coveted summit. The first two attempts were cut short by catastrophes. In 2014, an avalanche killed sixteen people on the mountain when Vilborg Arna was trying to complete her Seven Summits mission, climbing the highest peak on each of the continents.
A year later, the 7.8 earthquake that ravaged Nepal claimed over thirty lives on the mountain.
President Guðni praised VIlborg Arna for her achievement which showed what could be accomplished by setting goals and not giving up in the face of adversity, according to Vísir.
