Reykjavík residents who woke up early this morning were greeted with the the frozen ground and frozen windshields. According to the Meteorological Office this was the first time Reykjavík residents had to scrape frost off their windshields this winter.
But even if there was frost on the ground the Meteorological Office did not record frost last night. Haraldur Eiríksson at the Meteorological Office told the local news site visir.is the reason is that their measurements are taken two metres (6.6 ft) above ground. There can therefore be frost at ground level even if does not show on official measurements.
Last night saw light rain and as the temperature dropped overnight, due to verly little cloud cover, causing the moisture to condense as ice on the ground and car windshields. Haraldur points out that conditions today and tonight could cause frozen windshields, but rains and milder temperatures over the next few days will ensure early birds will not be greeted with any ice.
