As spring gets closer the whales are starting to return to Icelandic waters. Yesterday the crew and passengers of a whale watching boat operated by North Sailing in the town of Húsavík in North Iceland spotted the first blue whale of the season in Skjálfandi bay. The Whale Museum in Húsavík notes that the first blue whale of 2015 was spotted at the same time, mid March.
In recent years blue whales have come to Skjálfandi bay in late winter to feed, and stayed there until early summer. The best time to spot blue whales in Skjálfandi is May-June. By July these giants of the ocean swim out to sea in search of feed.
