A fire broke out in the building that houses the Whale Centre in Grandi harbour area, Reykjavík, Sunday afternoon. According to the National Broadcasting Service fire and rescue crews were called to the scene and quickly contained the fire.

Stella Stefánsdóttir, the exhibition‘s managing director, assessed the building this morning. She says the damages seem to be limited to one room. Only a single whale specimen model was destroyed during the fire.

The Whale Centre is set open in the near future. The centre will be the largest of its kind in Europe, with over twenty life-size specimen models on display. It will focus on whales found off the coast of Iceland, their biology and behaviour.
