Warmer weather, starting tomorrow
The IMO is forecasting a northerly gentle to strong breeze, 5-15 m/s (11-33 mph) today, with the highest wind speeds in east, with calmer winds in South and West Iceland. The wind will calming in the afternoon. Clear skies and a temperature of 1-3 degrees above freezing in the south, but at or below freezing in the north.
Tomorrow, the wind will turn to southwesterly, windiest in the Westfjords. Intermittent rain or drizzle, but dry in the east and south east. The temperature will rise to 3-10°C (37-50°F). warmest in the south. On Wednesday the temperature will be 3-12°C (37-54°F), warmest in South East Iceland. Clear skies in the east, but cloudy but mainly dry in the west.
Road conditions
Road conditions have improved with warmer weather. Almost all of the ring road is now clear, although there are still icy patches on several heaths, including Holtavörðuheiði heath, which connects North and West Iceland, and on the ring road connecting North and East Iceland. Several roads in the Westfjords are still impassable. All highland roads remain closed and impassable.
Travellers should check road conditions with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority before heading out, and remember that conditions on mountain and heath roads are frequently very different from conditions on lowland and closer to the coast.
