Final exams at state universities might be in jeopardy as professors threaten strikes in December 1832

The union of professors at state universities approved a motion to go on strike December 2-18, unless an agreement is reached in their wage dispute with the state.

The strike was approved by 85% of those who participated in the vote. More than 85% of members voted in the election. Rúnar Vilhjálmsson, the chairman of the union tells the local news site visir.is that support for the strike is more decisive that he had expected, reflecting the fact that professors are extremely frustrated with the negotiations between the state and the union. Negotiations between the professors at state universities and the state began last February when their contract expired.

The strike would affect students at the University of Iceland, The University of Akureyri, The Icelandic Agricultural University and Hólar University College. Only classes taught by full professors will be impacted, as well as classes taught by associate and assistant professors who are members of the Professors’ Union. This is the second year in a row when professors threaten strikes during the Christmas finals. Last year the union also approved a December strike which was called off at the last moment.
