The employees of Reykjavík whale watching companies are currently engaged in a race against time to rescue two bottlenose whales who stranded on the beach of Engye island outside the Old Harbor in downtown Reykjavík. The two whales are very weak, but the rescuers hope that the animals will survive until evening when the tide comes in.
Sverrir Tryggvason, a guide with Special Tours who was on a whale watching tour spotted the animals earlier today. He told the local newspaper Fréttablaðið that the animals were most likely chasing a school of mackerel close to the shore when the tide went out, stranding the whales on the beach. Sverrir told the news site Vísir that the animals have suffered some injuries and cuts while fighting to get back to the water. Both whales have lost significant quantities of blood.
Eight employees of Special Tours are in Engey attending to the whales, keeping them wet and hydrated. Sverrir told Vísir that he was optimistic the whales could be rescued. The rescue would have to wait until high tide at ten tonight.
