The island Surtsey has decreased by half since the Surtsey eruption back in 1963; dissipation of the island continues with each passing year. However, the island will not disappear entirely since the tuff at its core is quite resilient.
After the Surtsey eruption, the island measured 2.7 square kilometers (1.0 sq mi) and now measures 1.4 square kilometers (0.54 sq mi) due to the ocean engulfing lava and ash that compose the island.
According to the island's tour director, Borgþór Magnússon, the island's small peninsula is disappearing. Scientists also predict that the island’s landmass will decrease by two-thirds, with only the tuff core from the Surtsey eruption remaining.
