Fewer foreign travellers have visited the Holuhraun lava field this summer than had been anticipated, reports the National Broadcasting Service. Two marked hiking trails have been open to public since last summer and park rangers offer guided tours through the massive lava field.
The Holuhraun eruption began on 31 August 2104 and lasted for 181 days, ending on 27 February 2015.
The lava field covers an area 85 square km (32.8 sq mi) in size, which is almost 1.5 times the size of New York’s Manhattan island (22.83 sq mi, 59.1 km2).
