Fewer people died in car accidents last year than in the previous two years. A total of 15 people died in 13 seperate accidents in 2017, the most recent victim a Chinese woman in her 20s who died when a tour bus rolled over on the Ring Road in South Iceland on December 27.
Significant drop in serious accidents
The number of fatal road accidents is notable when we consider the fact that traffic along Icelandic roads increased by 11% in 2017 over 2016 when the number of fatal accidents was 18 people. In 2015 16 people died. On average 13 people have died in fatal accidents in the past 10 years. The number of fatal accidents peaked in 2006 when 28 people died in fatal road accidents. 2014 was similarly an outlier, when only 4 people died in car accidents.

The number of other serious accidents also shows a drop. During the first 10 months of 2017 132 serious accidents were reported, compared to 158 serious accidents in the first 10 months of 2016. Other types of accidents, both those where only minor injuries were reported, as well as those where no one was injured, remained unchanged with 646 less serious accidents in 2017, compared to 643 in 2016, and 4756 mishaps compared to 4730 in 2016.
