February saw a record increase in traffic in the capital region 2097

3. okt 2016 10:52

According to figures from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority, traffic in the capital region increased by 7.3% in February 2016 compared to the year before. This is the greatest year-on-year increase ever recorded.

The Road Authority points out that the growth in traffic in Reykjavík is taking place at the same time as traffic along Highway 1, the “ring road” has been growing. Unsurprisingly the greatest increase in traffic in Reykjavík is therefore found along the Ártúnsbrekka stretch of the main highway in Reykjavík, Miklabraut. The stretch of highway in Ártúnsbrekka, which is the hill east of Elliðaár river, saw an 8.8% growth in traffic volume in February, compared to the year before. All traffic heading out of Reykjavík, whether it takes the ring-road to West Iceland or South Iceland must drive through Ártúnsbrekka.

The Road Administration projects that traffic in 2016 will grow by 4%, compared to 2015.
